"Lili of the Isles" …Lili was a beautiful Italian model who had features that looked Polynesian, i.e. large almond shaped eyes and olive skin with high cheek bones. I initially sculpted her in terra cotta, and then, "transformed" her into marble. The piece was done in Pietra Santa, and is in Carrara marble, from the same quarries from which Michelangelo harvested his marble. The flowers over the ear and in her hair, as well as the sarong clasped at her shoulder, are typical of those worn in the Polynesian Islands. Unfortunately, my initial terra cotta study was destroyed during the transformation from clay to marble.
